In The Beginning
There was Maria. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and shaped by the Bronx. She’s moved more than fifteen times—lost count after a while. Life never sat still, and neither did she. Maria didn’t plan to be a designer. She thought she’d float through liberal arts until she figured it out. But fate — or maybe divine intervention — landed her in a graphic design major. “If you don’t like it, you can switch next semester,” said the faculty.
She didn’t know what a Mac was back then. But after one Digital Toolbox 101 class, she fell in love with video editing — and typography? That became her obsession. Maria wanted type art for her room but wasn’t about to spend $50 on one word at the mall. So she DIY-ed her own. What started as a homemade lettering project turned into a chalkboard wall. From there, cliche quotes became illustrated food puns, catching the attention of NYC’s restaurant scene. The gigs came, but something was still missing.
Then came Jesus.
Through her relationship with God, Maria realized her gifts were from Him. And the question arose: “How can I use all this to glorify God and serve His people?” That’s when Spice of Christ was born. Flavor from our Savior! A brand designed to feed people’s faith through God’s Word. Maria’s heart is on fire for the food metaphors in the Bible — from Jesus being the Bread of Life to the banquet table He invites us to.
Her first design? Not bread, but the classic NYC Greek coffee cup. Instead of “We are happy to serve you,” it says: “We are happy to serve Jesus.”
Now, through her YouTube series Hungry for God, Maria shares what God is doing in her life, one video at a time — and invites you to pull up a chair at the table and welcomes you to the community of Hungry Homies. God Bless You!
